Phreaking - Phreaking is a slang term coined to describe the activity of a subculture of people who study, experiment with, or exploit telephones, the telephone company, and systems connected to or composing the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) for the purposes of hobby or utility. The term "phreak" is a portmanteau of the words "phone" and "freak.

Van Eck phreaking - Van Eck phreaking is the process of eavesdropping on the contents of a CRT or LCD display using the electromagnetic emissions from it. It is named after Wim van Eck, a Dutch computer researcher, who published the first paper on it, although it is realised that an unknown government researcher had discovered it long before (see TEMPEST).
Beige box (phreaking) - In phone phreaking, a beige box is a device used to illegally use another person's phone line. It is technically equivalent to a telephone company lineman's handset — a telephone fitted with alligator clips to attach it to a line.
